Wine and Wineries - Cellar Tours

Information on touring the cellars of wine operations to find out how wine is made in various European locations. This category is for independent travelers who wish to examine the wine making process without going on an organized tour. Includes wine museums. If you are set on touring a particular winery or cellar--it is recommended to call or write ahead, and it helps to be in the wine industry.

France - Bomaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) - Bordeaux
Château Lafite Rothschild and other properties have tours by appointment only with at least two weeks advanced notice. Click on "addresses" in the top frame, then "useful information" to get detailed information.
France - Château Lascombes - Bordeaux
Visits and tastings Monday to Sunday from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 2:00 to 4:30 pm except on May 1st and between Christmas and January 1st. Click on "visits" then "visits and tastings."
France - Château Margaux - Bordeaux
Visits weekdays only, closed in August and for the harvest. Tasting for wine professionals only.
France - Gratien Meyer - Wines of Saumur
A maze of galleries from the Middle Ages holds the "Gratien & Meyer museum (Maxime Mabileau Museum), genuine living museum in which you will dive into one century’s wine making according to the traditional method."
France - Haut-Brion - Bordeaux
Visiting Haut-Brion is by apointment only. Contact info is under the FAQ (or you can search the site).
France - Maison du Tourisme et du Vin - Bordeaux
A recommended way to start your first Bordeaux tour is to go to the Maison du Tourisme et du Vin in Pauillac and pick up winery information.
France - Mumm Cellar Tours - Champagne Region
Visit the caves of the famous Mumm. Open daily in the summer. Costs 6 Euros.
Germany - Rheingauer Weinmuseum - Rhine Region
Lisa Shea describes this wine museum in Bromserburg, Germany.
Italy - Fontanafredda - Piedmonte Region
The old site offered Saturday and Sunday tours April through November. The new flash site doesn't have mention of tours and is only in Italian.
Italy - Museo Ratti - Piedmonte Region
Kyle Phillips describes the Museo Ratti, a winery (now with a museum) where wine has been made for over 1000 years.
Italy - Zeni Winery and Museum - Piedmonte Region
The winery, near lake Garda in the province of Verona, is open from Mid - March to the end of October, every day from 9am to 1pm and from 2pm to 6pm.
