Scotland Travel Tips | Edinburgh to the Highlands

Inside the Garden at Kellie Castle

Where I Went in Scotland

Edinburgh to the Highlands to the Isle of Skye and South to Loch Melfort and the Isle of Arran.

What I did in Scotland

Scotland was a magical trip for us. We started our journey in Edinburgh and went north by car.

An "off the beaten path" visit to Kellie Castle between Edinburgh and St. Andrews revealed a "Secret Garden" hidden behind the castle walls. We visited early one July morning and were "Wowed".

We stayed 4 nights in Granton-on-Spey to tour the Highlands and Whiskey Trail. Culdearn House was the perfect B&B. We highly recommend that you get the "full package which includes breakfast and dinner".

We visited Cawdor Castle and Inverness. The couple we traveled with went north to the Orkney Isles one day, but my hubby and I stayed in Granton-on-Spey and took a "Post-Bus" tour. You pay a minimal fee and get to tour the backroads and less traveled routes with a postman. Very cool!

A visit to the Isle of Skye is a must. You'll see the famous Eileen Doonan Castle enroute.

After Skye we began to make our way south (by way of Ferry) and had a beautiful rustic stay at Loch Melfort. "A book never should be judged by it's cover!"

Our final night in Scotland was at a B&B on the Isle of Arran. My husband played some golf and the rest of our party visited an ancient standing stone sight. Awesome!

Tips and Tricks

  • Since we were driving in a country on roads that we weren't used to, I used the lowest speed limit designated for the roads and added time for "photo ops", rest stops and the unexpected (like sheep in the middle of the road). Since we used ferries for some of the transport, we had to time ourselves accordingly. This kept our expectations as to how far we could travel in a day more realistic.
